About ESB
Overview of ESB

The English Speaking Board is an awarding body dedicated to promoting and encouraging all aspects of oral communication in English.

Since 1953, ESB has provided opportunities for all learners, whatever their age, ability or background, to practise and improve their speaking and listening skills. ESB acknowledges the individual differences which enrich the English language but believes that clarity and effectiveness of communication are essential.

Mission Statement

"The English Speaking Board's mission is to promote clear, effective oral communication at all levels by providing high quality assessments, training and services in the UK and overseas, recognising and encouraging the potential of all."

How we Assess

Specialist assessors from ESB's highly trained national team travel to centres throughout the U.K. and Overseas.

All candidates are assessed within their peer group, taking turns to speak or demonstrate, question or answer. Emphasis is placed on sharing knowledge, skills and understanding.

To assist in meeting assessment tasks and criteria, presentations should be complemented by visual aids, notes or any other support materials, where appropriate.

The assessor gives general verbal feedback to the group on the day. Each candidate receives an individual narrative report within five days. Successful candidates receive a certificate within approximately six weeks, giving qualification title, level and grade of pass.
