ESB Assessments for every School Year Group Junior Assessments include four sections, carefully targeted for EACH year group 1-6. Year Group descriptors are only indicative however, and you may enter candidates at the grade appropriate for their experience and development:
Overview of Tasks: The Summary Overview (see right) shows the progression at each level.
Grades: ESB Junior Medallion (previously Junior 4) is the top grade for Juniors, also known as Grade 1 when mapped against other Speech exams on the national scale.
Oral Skills for School Interviews: Suitable for any child likely to face an interview on moving to senior school, this syllabus covers preparation for an interview as well as practice in being interviewed, and includes a 1-to-1 interview with the ESB examiner.
ESB strongly recommends 1. that a tutor, teacher or any other member of staff e.g. Teaching Assistant, School Secretary, is present during the assessment (mandatory during Oral Skills for School Interviews assessments) 2. that parents are not present during the assessment, particularly for Junior grades. The presence of parents can adversely affect their own children’s marks due to the added stress that this can sometimes cause, and other parents may understandably object if their children are observed by others during an exam situation.
Please contact ESB before the assessment to discuss if these recommendations cannot be met.
