Mutual recognition of Awarding Bodies' Units

Recognition of ESOL Skills for Life Units

ESOL Skills for Life Qualifications: Mutual recognition of Awarding Bodies' Units
Date posted: 04 March 2008 - QCA

There is a requirement for mutual recognition which applies to national awarding bodies offering the ESOL Skills for Life qualification.

The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority's requirement is that all awarding bodies offering the ESOL Skills for Life qualifications must recognise prior achievement of the qualification at unit (mode) level where this has been completed with another awarding body.

Where a candidate is able to show evidence of having already completed a unit of this qualification, the candidate should not be disadvantaged by a requirement to complete a unit of the same title and level with another awarding body. On completion of a unit of an accredited qualification, a candidate is entitled to request and receive unit certification from the awarding body.

National School of Government selects ESB qualification

Our new association with the National School of Government

There is excitement in the air with a very recent ESB achievement. The National School of Government (better known as the Government's Business School) has decided to use the Certificate in Professional Presentation Skills syllabus and qualification to be incorporated into their 'Effective Presentations' course. So instead of providing their Public Servant delegates with a course attendance certificate they will walk away with a 'real' qualification.

This falls in line with Government policy to reward workers with genuine and meaningful qualifications.

The full Press Release can be read below (4.10.2007). Additionally, the National School's Weekly News Digest is always a good read, see http://www.nationalschool.gov.uk

There will be an update after the 'accredited' course at the end of November.

The CPPS is a Professional and under used qualification. Should you want more information either speak to one of the staff at Southport or call me direct (details from the Head Office).

Time to get qualified in Presentation Skills

Public servants developing their presentation skills with the National School of Government can now go back to work with a professional qualification from ESB. 'Effective Presentations' (Certificate in Professional Presentation Skills) gives participants the skills and knowledge to make memorable presentations, with the fresh option of being assessed for The English Speaking Boards (ESB) Certificate in Professional Presentation Skills.

The programme takes a practical approach to skills development, with candidates developing their own presentations on work-based subjects supported by feedback and coaching in key areas. Participants explore aspects of both planning and performance, including body language, how to deal with nerves, and dealing with difficult questions and situations. The programme is designed to be challenging, with participants benefiting from high levels of support and opportunity for practice.

At the end of the three-day programme, participants make a formal presentation, with the option of being assessed for the ESB Certificate - a qualification at Level 4, which the National Qualifications Framework describes as "specialist learning, involving detailed analysis of a high level of knowledge…", and "appropriate for people working in technical and professional jobs and/or managing and developing others." Assessment covers 'Presentation' and 'Questions & Discussion' with the use of visual aids and other demonstration materials taken into account.

Graham Le-Gall of the English Speaking Board explained: "We promote and assess effective, confident and constructive communication skills for all levels and all ages. The emphasis is very much on spoken English as a practical and enjoyable life skill, with the focus at assessment on the candidate both as a speaker and as an active listener sharing knowledge and ideas with others."

National School Programme Director Quentin Oliver added: "Presentation skills are key in the Professional Skills for Government competency framework, and there is much be gained from formal qualification. However, the course is also ideal for those who simply want to brush up their skills without formal assessment."
